At Williams and Cleal we are passionate about furniture, quality craftmanship and beautiful functional design. We strongly believe, having experienced this ourselves, that having the opportunity to learn from a leading designer / maker, in a professional environment, alongside some extremely talented craftspeople is both unique, inspiring and above all rewarding for the student.  All the group sizes are restricted to ensure individual attention. The team are supportive, highly skilled and passionate about furniture.

Jane Cleal

Having originally established Williams and Cleal with Justin in 1990 she has worked in all areas of their business, and now successfully combines this with teaching students in their workshops.

"I developed my passion for furniture at an early age and studied a 3-year fine furniture craft and management course at Buckinghamshire College obtaining distinctions.

In 1988 I attended a lecture by Alan Peters OBE, who was directly linked to the Arts and Crafts movement having been apprenticed to Edward Barnsley. I was so inspired that I approached him and successfully obtained an apprenticeship at Alan's workshops.
My experiences as a designer, maker and lecturer help ensure Williams and Cleal offer exceptional, dynamic and rewarding furniture making courses".

James Ralph

"I trained at Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire in Furniture Design and Fine Craftmanship before moving on to John Makepeace OBE for 10 years. I worked on a number of his iconic pieces and was awarded two Guilds marks by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers for the tall chest of drawers 'Eighteen' and a ladies writing desk. Whilst with John I was also involved in training his apprentices.

I also subsequently ran my own furniture business for four years, before joining Williams and Cleal".
